Axel Einar Hjorth – A Pioneer in Swedish Design
Axel Einar Hjorth was one of Sweden's most important furniture designers during the Swedish Grace period . He is particularly known for designing the so-called sports cabin furniture in pine – robust and timeless furniture with a rustic charm.
Hjorth was chief designer for NK's (Nordiska Kompaniet) furniture department from 1927 to 1938. His first major breakthrough came with NK's exclusive exhibition at the World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929, where he presented the cabinet "Louis" and the model "Caesar" . In the 1930s he switched to designing simpler models for series production as well as rustic pine furniture that continues to inspire to this day.
