Each Vandra rug is a testament to craftsmanship, blending centuries of tradition with artistic methods to create hand-woven rugs that unite both heritage and quality. Traditional rag rugs are an interior detail that has been a part of Swedish homes since the late 18th century. In the beginning, textiles were rare and expensive, so rugs were reserved for festive occasions and displayed on walls. It wasn’t until the 19th century that they became a permanent part of everyday homes, placed on floors as both a functional and decorative element. We continue this rich tradition and make each rug entirely by hand.

Weaving rugs is a demanding process that requires both physical effort and artistic precision. Preparing the materials involves winding and arranging yarns, while for the cotton collection, the fabric is dyed, cut into rags and sewn together. These rags – or the wool yarn in the wool collection – are then carefully placed on the loom by hand.

The widest rugs require three weavers working together – one on each side of the loom and one in the middle. To ease the strain on the weavers’ shoulders, air-pressure rams help compress the weft. Once finished, the rug is removed from the loom and finished with hand-knotted fringes, an oriental braid or a hemmed edge for the wool collection.

Vandra Rugs can weave rugs of any size, with individual pieces limited to a maximum width of 6 metres and a length of 16 metres due to the loom size. For larger spaces they can seamlessly join rugs together, and for wall-to-wall installations or staircases they offer a latex backing for added stability.

With care and intention in every step, Vandra Rugs is committed to sustainable practices that show respect for both people and the planet.

Sustainability
Vandra Rugs aims to minimize the environmental impact at every stage of the rug production process. All rugs are therefore made to order, and although they have stock of the most commonly used colors, most are only dyed when an order is received. This ensures that overproduction of both rugs and materials is avoided, reducing waste and conserving natural resources.

In addition, leftover materials are reused to make new rugs. Most importantly, Vandra rugs are made from high-quality materials and timeless designs, ensuring they will be cherished and used for decades – and find new homes time and time again.

Vandra Rugs is committed to providing sustainable choices and produces undyed and unbleached rugs. Within the wool collection, they offer 6-8 naturally undyed shades, allowing customers to choose an option that reduces water and chemical consumption while preserving the natural beauty of the wool. For the cotton collection, they offer undyed and unbleached options for a more environmentally friendly choice.
